Long Shot at LOUDON, N.H.– Greg Biffle. Winless for almost a year and seeded a distant ninth in the 12-driver field, few considered him a serious contender. But Biffle never counted himself out, believing a strong run Sunday in the opener at New Hampshire Motor Speedway would put him in position to race for the Sprint Cup title. Biffle used a self-described textbook pass on Jimmie Johnson with 12 laps to go to end a 33-race winless streak and vault himself all the way to third in the Chase standings. He trails co-leaders Johnson and Carl Edwards, his teammate at Roush Fenway Racing, by just 30 points. There was a little nervous abut Loudon. We’ve gotten through this one a little better than I expected.

Kurt Busch and Martin Truex Jr., two drivers not eligible for the Sprint Cup title, finished sixth and seventh. Chase drivers Tony Stewart, Denny Hamlin and Kevin Harvick rounded out the top 10. It looks like that Tony Stewart will leave Joe Gibbs Racing following the 2008 Sprint Cup season, as he will buy into the fledgling Haas CNC Racing operation. Stewart signed with Joe Gibbs Racing in 1998 and began driving the orange number 20 Home Depot car in 1999. He won three races, captured the Rookie of the Year title, and most significantly, he sparked a trend in which rookie drivers immediately emerged as winners. In fact, since Stewart’s rookie campaign, a rookie has won a race in every season except 2004 and 2008, and the season is at its halfway point.

Stewart’s burning desire to be the man in charge has lured him in a different direction. He has an appealing personality for sponsors, and he is a successful team owner in the World of Outlaws. Perhaps Stewart’s desire to associate himself with General Motorsports prompted this move. Joe Gibbs stated that he would help Stewart start his own team, but it would have to be a team that fields Toyotas.
